Discus Fish Care Guide [Tips and Tricks]

Discus is one of the most elegant, ornamental fish you can have in your home aquarium. It has a unique disc-like laterally compressed body, decorated with various shades of colors, and colorful patterns.

There are a few basics you should know before you try discus fish breeding. Chances of you failing are much higher if you don’t know and don’t follow these basic steps properly.

The following will explain some of the basics of discus fish breeding. If you pay attention to the fine details and follow the instructions, your chances of failing will be much lower, and most likely you will be able to breed them successfully in your very first attempt.

  1. Buy 10-15 pairs of young discus fish from different locations.

They will be too small to identify their gender, so put them in a tank and allow them to grow together for some time. Observe them, and you will notice a pairing-off behavior from some of them. The pairs will move to separate locations in the tank, and they will try to ‘defend their territory’ by being aggressive and not allowing others to come near. Transfer those pairs to different tanks.

  1. There are individuals/aquariums who sell ‘proven pairs.’

Find a suitable one and purchase a good ‘proven pair’ of discus fish. This will cost you some money since proven pairs don’t sell cheap, but if you manage to find a solid pair, your task will become much easier.

3. Prepare a suitable fish tank for the breeding pair.

The height of the tank should be around 2 ft, and the tank should be able to hold 20+ gallons of water. You can make one according to the above specs or can buy a suitable tank from a shop. Keep the bottom of the tank bare.

This will help when removing debris. The breeding pair will need a vertical surface inside the tank to lay their eggs.

A small potted plant (ceramic) can act as the vertical surface. It’s better if you can use a power filter and a sponge filter as well.

4. To succeed Maintain the water quality is vital.

Since discus like warm, acidic water, you should maintain a pH value of 6.5 and a temperature of 85 F.

When you are replacing the water, make sure the new water added to the tank also meet the above requirements. Best practice is to prepare the water in a separate tank, and then use that water in the replacement process.

-You should change 5% to 10% of the water in the breeding tank with fresh water, 3-4 times a week. A complete water change can be done once a week. Both will help the breeding process greatly.

-Frozen bloodworms are a good choice for feeding. Please remember to get rid of any left-overs after you feed them. This will help in preventing parasite infections and maintaining water quality.

When the pair starts laying eggs, you can expect them to lay eggs at least three times a month. They will continue to lay eggs for 3-4 months.
